It was the greatest comeback in the competition’s history and Everton Vs Sheffield Wednesday 1966 FA Cup Final is the full story of that incredible match. Everton hadn’t been in an FA Cup Final for 33 long years. Could 1966 be the year that they finally brought the trophy back to Goodison Park? The run to the final had gone according to plan as the team cruised through each round without conceding a single goal. It was Sheffield Wednesday that now stood between the Toffees and cup glory. The record of not letting in a goal didn’t last too long! Everton went a goal down after just 4 minutes and it got worse for Everton just after the break when Gordon West conceded a second Wednesday goal. With half an hour remaining the cause looked lost. Cue the man from Cornwall and the unlikely hero Mike Trebilcock. It was a brave decision by manager Harry Catterick to play Trebilcock who had only made 7 league appearances all season. But the Cornishman was up to the task and in 5 astonishing minutes had put Everton level at 2-2. From then on there was only one winner and the decisive goal came 16 minutes from time when Derek Temple latched on to a mistake from Wednesday’s Gerry Young running through to slot past Ron Springett. This was a great cup final full of flowing skillful football from two excellent attacking teams – one of the very best.
