Iwo Jima was arguably the toughest battle the Marines had ever faced. The raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima is one of the most iconic photographs of World War II. The inspiration for Clint Eastwood’s Oscar nominated films is captured in this new documentary that features veteran interviews with harrowing colour footage shot by Marine Corps cameramen. The military planners assumed it would take the Marines only three or four days to secure the small island but it took over a month of brutal fighting before Iwo Jima was finally taken. It was the only battle in Marine Corps history where they suffered more casualties than the enemy. One third of all Marines killed in WWII would fall at Iwo Jima. This documentary tells the story of the battle for Iwo Jima through the eyes of those who lived through it.
