The Shire Horse introduced into Britain by William the Conqueror in 1066 carried the knights into tournaments and battle. In the First World War they were used for transportation by the British and French armies. Apart from carting man and hauling long-distance goods the Shires played a vital role in the agricultural revolution of the late eighteenth century. Even beyond 1939 tractors were regarded as supplements to the working horse.By the 60’s the Shire Horse was on the brink of extinction except for the enthusiasm and dedication of a small group of breeders and devotees known a ‘The Few’ This programme was made with the support of the Shire Horse Society and in particular Mr Roy Bird MBE who gives an insight into how these ‘Gentle Giants’ have survived the passage of time.
